Artist Statement: Deeply rooted in the tradition of Surrealism, my artistic practice employs techniques such as automatic drawing and writing, dream imagery, and improvisational abstractions. These methods allow for the spontaneous creation of images that even I cannot predict. The resulting works often depict strange, enigmatic scenes that reflect my modest and generally comfortable Midwestern upbringing, interwoven with layers of anxiety, confusion, and fantasy. This blend creates a relatable sense of unease, mirroring the disorienting nature of a world that often defies logic.
Writing, particularly poetry, is integral to my creative process. It serves as a chronicle of personal experiences, commentary on current events, and reflections on distant memories. This body of work becomes a rich source of reference material, which I revisit when familiar shapes and forms begin to emerge within the automatic drawings. This approach leads to images that are both personal and mysterious, generating narratives that suggest plots and characters, yet remain open to interpretation.
With my drawings, paintings and digital work, I am embracing the discomfort that comes with being human and that is also inherent in the art-making process. By attempting to become comfortable with being uncomfortable, I am acknowledging this state of unease is not only inevitable but also essential for growth and creativity. This acceptance allows me to push boundaries and explore new territories within my work, ultimately enriching my artistic practice and deepening the connection between my inner world and the world around me.
