Paul Lyons
Photography
Paul Lyons, known professionally as Hitch, is a Dayton-based fine art photographer with over 30 years of experience. Inspired by his Appalachian upbringing and later life living in the city, much of Paul’s work explores the contrast between natural landscapes and urban environments. His photography focuses on capturing the emotional and visual tension between these two worlds, inviting viewers to reflect on their surroundings in new ways. This dichotomy of influence in his life leads to a unique perspective on beauty and creates a viewpoint that's expressed in all of his artistic work.
In addition to taking photographs, Paul is passionate about teaching. He offers workshops and classes, sharing both the art and science of photography with aspiring photographers. Through exhibitions, community engagement, and education, Paul continues to inspire others while expanding his own artistic journey.
Photography has always been my way of interpreting the world—an extension of how I see and experience life. From the moment my father handed me a camera at age eight, I became captivated by the process of transforming fleeting moments into lasting visual stories. Over the years, what began as a personal passion evolved into both a lifelong pursuit of artistic expression and a love for teaching. Through workshops and classes, I enjoy sharing the art and science of photography, helping others develop their own creative voice.
My work is inspired by the contrast between two environments that have shaped my life: the natural beauty of my Appalachian upbringing and the urban energy of Dayton, Ohio. This duality drives my artistic vision, and I strive to capture the tension and harmony between the man-made and the natural in my photographs. Whether it’s gritty city streets or tranquil mountain vistas, I aim to evoke emotion and spark reflection in those who view my work.
Having worked as a photographer for over 30 years, I’ve captured everything from intimate portraits to large events. Now, I’m focused on creating fine art that tells a cohesive story, blending my past and present. At the same time, I continue to teach and share what I’ve learned, because for me, photography isn’t just about what I see—it’s about connecting with others, inspiring new perspectives, and helping others discover the joy of capturing the world around them.
