Kate Santucci

Kate Huser Santucci lives and works in Dayton, Ohio. She graduated from Wright State University in 1994 with a BFA in visual art with a concentration in sculpture. In 2019 she completed a residency in encaustic painting with artist Patricia Seggebruch, and was a 2020 recipient of a Culture Works Artist Opportunity Grant. She was recently awarded a residency in France to take place in the autumn of 2025.
Kate has an upcoming show at Wheat Penny Oven and Bar in Dayton in May of 2024. Her work has most recently been shown at Studios on High in Columbus, Dayton Society of Artists, and the Roger Glass Center for the Arts in Dayton, Ohio. Public work includes a mural in downtown Dayton on E. 3rd St., and a series of 3 pieces for the Southeast Branch of the Dayton Metro Library. Her works are part of private collections in Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, and California.
I am drawn as an artist to the examination of how human beings are interconnected with our environment, and how we move through it and communicate with one another.
Much of my recent work examines these ideas through the lens of natural science and human interaction. I use encaustic painting techniques to explore themes such as communication, time, and our perception of change, both in the short and long term. I use images of microbes, plants, and human forms to tell the story of the way we are evolving. Asemic writing and mark making has become an important element in my paintings, as I further develop my thoughts on how we interpret meaning and context in our struggle to understand one another and our world. My work involves multiple layers and textures, inviting the viewer to look deeper into the piece and glimpse imagery floating beneath the surface of the wax.
